The Pool Magic
This is where the aquamagic happens. We share our magic tricks and tips on how we make our pools sparkle.
We will also discuss the latest, hip and happening topics in the pool industry. Our goal is to make you as pool nerdy as we are.
Tip: Avoid damaging your pool surface, grout and tiles by regularly having your pool water tested for calcium hardness
Tip: Have your water tested with a spintouch to ensure the readings are accurate and the right amount of chemicals are added
Tip: If you need to empty water from your pool use the waste setting. Backwashing and Rinsing for longer than a few minutes upsets the media bed (usually sand)
Tip: Make sure you turn the pump off before moving the valve.
Tip: When backwashing and when moving the valve on the filter (mpv – multipurpose filter valve) always press it right down before turning it, so as not to drag and break the spider gasket inside and cause pool leaks.
Tip: Stain treatments are best performed in Winter for two reasons. 1. They’re acidic and therefore best to be applied when the pool is not being used and 2. They work best when the water is cold.
Tip: How to check if you have a leak in your system:
Firstly have a look at the amount of evaporation in your area, as you may not have a leak at all. On hot and windy days pools can lose centimeters of water just through normal evaporation. The weather station at the Maroochydore airport will give you a good indication of the amount of evaporation in your area: visit that site here:

If you still feel you may have a leak in your system you could do the simple bucket test. Here’s how:
Ensure the pool is filled to its normal level.
Grab a good watertight bucket and fill it with your pool water so it is just a few centimeters from the top.
Set the bucket on the top step of your pool so the top half of the bucket is out of the pool.
Turn off the pool pump.
Mark the level of the bucket water on the inside of the bucket.
Mark the level of the pool water on the outside of the bucket.
Turn the pool pump back on so it will continue normal operation.
After 24hrs, turn off the pool pump and recheck the water levels of both and compare the two.
If both water levels have dropped equally, this is just evaporation. If the pool water has dropped more than the bucket, this could mean you have a leak somewhere in your pool.
The evaporation rate for each day is different, so the amount of water lost to evaporation can vary if you perform this test multiple times. You can check the evaporation rates for our area. Visit the BOM transpiration page here:
Keep in mind though, if it rains within the 24hr test period, the DIY pool leak test will need to be re-performed.
